Sure Travel Journey Vol 4.4 Spring 2018 | Page 4

“ In this special edition of Sure Travel Journey, we focus on the importance of photography in our lives, and the science and art of creating durable images “ Departure Lounge I have a ritual in January every year that connects me to the past and reminds me of people and events that have defined me. In doing this ritual, I feel centred and at peace, appreciating who I am, why I am, and what’s important to me. In the stillness of dawn, I browse through a suitcase of old photographs, offering respect to those who have died and to those who still experience the everyday ups and downs with me. We share a laugh here and a tear there. In the world of digital, you don’t have to carry a suitcase of old photographs around. You can have both, one in a suitcase and one on your device. I scanned mine onto the Photomyne app, and if future generations are interested they can find them in the cloud. What an amazing world we live in! In this special edition of Sure Travel Journey, we focus on the importance of photography in our lives, and the science and art of creating durable images. Never before in history have so many photographs been taken, shared and enjoyed among so many of us. In The weird, wonderful world of photography (page 12) we learn that as of 2018, over 40 billion photos have been shared on Instagram with over 800 million active users. We are visual creatures; seeing is believing. So when you decide on your next device, review our gadget expert’s advice on mobile photography (page 16). Today, everything is visual. Content must be visual. The job market is screaming for digital content producers who can tell compelling stories with their cameras – and their words – as many travelling photographers do in this edition (see Visions from the road, page 36). Professional photojournalists like Samantha Reinders take us on amazing photographic tours (page 26): her photo of Nagura from the Surma Tribe in Ethiopia is an especially beautiful image from one of these trips. If you haven’t met Cathy Specific, Queen of the Skies, the amazing Trolley Dolly, take notes from How I Travel (page 15). Clock up your miles as a frequent flyer at Gate 69: www.gate69.co.za. And don’t forget to get your camera out and add to the bucket list of photo hotspot destinations (page 20). I have one on top of my list, Lapland. Watch this space.
