The beauty is often in the surprise moments and unexpected encounters.” Top left: View from a bridge across the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey. Top right: Tihar festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. The festival is a five-day affair of lights, food, family blessings and gifts. Bottom: The Arch at Spitskoppe in Namibia. f lio If a more spectacular natural scene exists, I haven’t seen it! And if you haven’t camped here, you haven’t yet lived. Opposite: A young eagle hunter at the Eagle Hunter Festival just outside Olgii in northwestern Mongolia. Eagle hunting is a big part of how the nomadic Kazakh minority of this region define themselves and their ancestry. Bürkitshi (the Kazakh word for falconers who hunt with golden eagles) take their eagles high into the mountains so that they can scan the valleys below for foxes and other animals, which the eagles fly down to catch. The annual Golden Eagle Festival – where this series of images was taken – is held in the sub-zero chilliness of Ölgii every October to display the skill of the eagle hunters. This year over 100 hunters participated – including this little guy. 32 // MAKE MEMORIES FOR LIFE
