DEPARTURE LOUNGE // SPRING 2018
WHERE IN THE WORLD ?

PHILADELPHIA !

It ’ s difficult to believe the modern travel photography trend of the “ selfie ” is by no means a new phenomenon – the first was taken in the back yard of Robert Cornelius ’ family chandelier shop in Philadelphia . Cornelius took the image by removing the lens cap and then running into frame , where he sat for a minute before covering up the lens again . On the back of the image he wrote “ The first light picture ever taken . 1839 .” This precedent-setting spirit runs deep in “ Philly ”, one of America ’ s most history-steeped cities . The Founding Fathers all lived and worked here , laying the groundwork for the creation of the United States . It ’ s also home to the United States ’ oldest stock exchange and to Declaration House , where Thomas Jefferson lived when he wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence ( in just three weeks !), as well as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall . But there ’ s more to this Pennsylvanian city than history : Philadelphia has also gained a reputation as a top destination for arts , culture , markets and signature street food , making it a worthy addition to every USA traveller ’ s itinerary .

“ Food stories are woven into everyday life ,” according to Johannesburg-based Dianne Bibby , a recipe developer , food stylist , writer and photographer , who ’ s convinced they ’ re vibrant and delicious enough to travel the world in search of . Dianne ’ s blog features these “ adventures in food ”, chronicling her taste-inspired trips to destinations such as Geneva , Nice and Bologna . Sure Travel asked her to dish out her favourite foods – and destinations .
Have you ever travelled specifically for food ? I recently travelled to France and Italy on a gastronomic food tour . From Michelin-starred restaurants to local fresh food markets , it ’ s impossible not to be completely charmed . Locally , I recently took a group of food enthusiasts to the Karoo for a weekend of local feasting . The Karoo has that “ magical something ”, which quietly captivates all who visit .
What made you leave a career in fashion design at 36 to pursue your love of the culinary arts ? Food and design are quite similar really , the only difference being creating with produce versus fabrics . Food and the way we eat is constantly changing , making it one of the most exciting arenas to work in . For me , the pleasure of food lies not only in the eating thereof but also those with whom we choose to share it .
From Michelin-starred restaurants to amazing food markets , France has a delectable taste of everything to keep a foodie happy .
Favourite travel destination ? Somehow I keep going back to Italy . I love the people , their convivial attitude and the way in which they celebrate food with gusto and passion . And then there ’ s the architecture , art , gelato and coffee !
What ’ s your ultimate comfort food when you ’ re travelling ? Strangely enough , if I find Bircher muesli at hotel breakfast buffets it brings a sense of calm and normality . Other than that , I hope for all the food and flavours that are unlike home .

What destinations are on your travel bucket list ? The list keeps getting longer , but at the top is Morocco and Iceland – polar opposites , I know ! Iceland for the breathtaking scenery and Morocco for the exotic souks , crumbling stucco walls and , of course , all the Middle Eastern food I can muster .
