Departure
Lounge
I have journeyed to many wonderful
destinations, observing urban lifestyles,
street culture, food culture, art, fashion
– all voyages of discovery in search of
what makes a place fascinating. Sri Lanka
(page 24) was definitely one of those
destinations, for this is where I discovered
Ayurvedic, which is a combination of
treatments based on the idea of balancing
our bodies using diet, herbal treatments,
breathing and natural therapies. If you’ve
never tried an Ayurveda spa, put it at the
top of your list!
If you’re into coffee culture, a true
Ethiopian coffee ceremony with locals is
an incredible experience. You’ll get your
first taste of this amazing brew onboard
Ethiopian Airlines, flying to Addis Ababa
(page 40) and beyond directly from SA.
And if you want a roadtrip with
adventure and nature on tap, look no
further than New Zealand (page 30). With
excellent flights from our partner Qantas,
there’s never been a better time to check
out Tolkien country.
Some people follow the sun, others
chase thrills, but for people like Hein
van Tonder, it’s all about the food. He
builds entire travel itineraries in pursuit
of a single dish (page 10). That’s why he’s
known as the Gourmet Hunter – what a
great career title to make your own!
If you get your thrills from adrenaline
sports, check out all the wild winter
sports (page 12) you may never have
heard of, but will want to try after reading
this. Turns out that skiing on the moon
may not be that far-fetched for SpaceX
CEO Elon Musk!
I loved reading about how the “pink
travel” market is changing and expanding
across the globe (page 16), and what
tourism and hospitality authorities are
doing to attract the R2.5 trillion per
annum spent by gay travellers.
Closer to home, this is the time of
year to take advantage of all the fantastic
winter specials on offer. So take a sho’t
left and explore our beautiful country.
Staying at home – but taking a slight
detour from travel – on 18 July 2018 we
celebrate a centenary of Nelson Mandela’s
life and legacy. The Nelson Mandela
Foundation and The Obama Foundation
have announced that President Barack
Obama will deliver the 16th Nelson
Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg.
The lecture’s theme will be “Renewing
the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active
Citizenship in a Changing World”. The
lecture will take place on the 17 July 2018,
a day before Nelson Mandela International
Day, and will be held at the Ellis Park Arena
in Johannesburg. About 4,000 people are
expected to attend. Further information
can be found on www.nelsonmandela.org
As I look across the bay at Robben
Island, I am reminded of his greatness,
encapsulated in the following quote: “I
learned that courage was not the absence
of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave
man is not he who does not feel afraid,
but he who conquers that fear”.
To fully enjoy life, to really appreciate
the world, we must experience different
lifestyles and cultures, making memories
for life.
Happy Travelling,
journey
