DEPARTURE LOUNGE // WINTER 2018 How I Travel with Alan Van Gysen Photographer Alan Van Gysen spends his life immersed in the elements, shooting extreme sports while travelling to destinations way off the beaten path – with a special penchant for Africa. In the past year alone he has travelled to Namibia, Senegal, Madagascar and Equatorial Guinea, to name but a few countries. He always has his bags ready for the next adventure. 3 | APPLE IPHONE 5: No need for an upgrade. This thing is waterproof, dirtproof, snowproof and dropproof, thanks to the Lifeproof cover. 4 | APPLE MACBOOK PRO: For all my working needs – most importantly photo retouching, storing and processing while on the road. 6 | UV PROTECTION BUFF: Another essential for keeping my face and lips safe from the sun while photographing outdoors. Plus you can pretend you’re a ninja if you’re having a slow day. 6 7 | FAITH FOR DAILY LIVING DEVOTIONAL BOOKLET AND MOLESKIN JOURNAL: I’m a man of faith so my day always starts with warm water and lemon, followed by coffee and a reading. 1 | DAKINE CAMERA BACKPACK: I can fit everything in here, from my 1DX Mark2 Canon to my sunscreen. Important items inside include lenses, chargers and my sunglasses. I’ve got pterygiums in both eyes from years spent squinting into the sun, so I never leave home without my sunnies nowadays. 2 | KLEAN KANTEEN WATER BOTTLE: You need to stay hydrated on the road and I’m not a fan of plastic bottles. There’s enough single-use plastic out there. 5 | FINISTERRE WATERPROOF DUFFLE BAG: This bag is completely waterproof and airtight. It’s a must for those wet African adventures and exploratory missions. I mainly use it to carry my waterproof camera housings, coffee and towel. On a recent trip to Equatorial Guinea, we were camping in the jungle and I ended up keeping everyone’s food in here because the rats kept breaking into the other bags, but they couldn’t smell the food when it was in the airtight duffel. 8 | AEROPRESS COFFEE PLUNGER: There are two things I never leave home without - my camera and my aeropress. It’s all about priorities! 9 | VIVOBAREFOOT GOBI 2 SWIMRUN SHOES: They’re probably not going to win you any fashion prizes but I love these ultra-functional, minimalistic shoes that cover me for everything from beach walking to mountain hiking. Plus they’re super-comfy and light, making them perfect for flying in. 8 9 PHOTO BY KEAHLO VAN GYSEN 1 5 3 2 4 14 // MAKE MEMORIES FOR LIFE 7
