And there were almost always two very
unhappy looking people: the bride and
groom. We never did figure this part out –
but each day a good hour was spent ogling
the wonderful spectacle and often being
invited into the party.
Instead of museums and temples we
set about concentrating on our best
impromptu cricket games. Admittedly Dad
and I both have shoulder issues and our
bowling days are a thing of the past, while
Mom prefers the art of Couch Cricket
– but it’s safe to say we’re all fanatics
regardless. Which in India, of course,
always makes for a good conversation
starter and is a great way to while away a
few hours and make friends. From the ghat
steps of Varanasi at midnight to a small
village in the Thar Desert, we joined the
