I love Cape Town, so much so that I have
made it my home for more than eight
years. But like any other local, I know that
when the summer holidays roll around
it stops being our town.
As tour buses crowd the roads and
restaurant waiting lists get longer the
question always becomes: where to go to
escape the maddening crowds? My wife
and I escaped up the rugged West Coast
last summer and took a sho’t left into the
West Coast National Park to the Greek
island-like Kraalbaai.
I was stunned by the warm tropical blue
beaches of its inviting lagoon. With the

water gently lapping the shores I could
have been in the Maldives. We swam, we
selfied, we spoke to smiling locals; one
even offered us a memorable boat cruise
around the vast lagoon. After the boat
ride we headed back to our self-catering
spot and had a real South African
summer braai.
We left feeling rather smug, having
found the holy grail of Capetonian
getaways: a hidden gem off the beaten
track, a mere 98 kilometres from home.
Just don’t tell the tourists.
