ART
Life in the Name
of the National Art
By the decision of the Moscow City
Duma, which legally became an owner of the
gallery, P. M. Tretyakov was nominated as its
lifelong patron. Same as before, Tretyakov had
almost the sole authority to select paintings,
making purchases both for the funds
allocated by the Duma and for his own
resources, transferring such acquisitions as a
gift to The Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov Moscow
City Art Gallery (it was the full name of the
Tretyakov Gallery at that time). Tretyakov
continued to take care of the expansion of
the premises, having added in the 1890s 8
additional spacious halls to the 14 of the
existing ones.

Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov died on
December 16, 1898. Over the years, the
Tretyakov Gallery has become not only a huge
museum, known to the world, but also a large
scientific center dedicated to the storage
and restoration, study and promotion of
valuable museum pieces. The researchers of
the gallery are actively involved in the
development of issues of the history and
theory of Russian art, arranging numerous
exhibitions both in our country and abroad,
give lectures, organize guided tours, carry out
major efforts in restoration and expert work,
introduce new forms of the museum computer
informatics. The Tretyakov Gallery has one of
the richest specialized libraries in Russia, with
more than 200 thousand volumes of books on
art; with one-of-a-kind photo library and
slideshow, equipped with modern technology
and restoration workshops.
Thus, the gallery continues to serve for
the benefit of the Russian art and its
development, therefore the ideas and
intentions of Tretyakov are becoming the
reality also in our days. Being a true patriot, a
citizen and a devotee, he put his whole heart
into his work and had displayed rare restraint,
persistence and perseverance in achieving
the goal.
