Police CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 make every day living without Bill,” Risvold said, adding that he believes Mathews would have wanted others to learn from this tragedy. “When you’re driving, put down your phone, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes up, looking at what’s around you and what’s in front of you. …There’s just no ex- cuse today to get behind the wheel when you’re under the infl uence of anything,” Risvold said. The police chief said that in the coming months he will work with the Highway 12 Safety Coalition to request that the Minnesota Depart- ment of Transportation add dis- tracted driving and impaired driving signs along the Offi cer Bill Mathews Memorial Highway. “I believe that would honor Bill [and be] something for the greater good, a reminder that could possi- bly help avert another senseless trag- edy,” he said. During the meeting, the police chief gave a replica of the memorial highway sign to the fallen offi cer’s wife, Shawn, and son, Wyatt. “Through this loss, we’ve gained great friendships and support and we are extremely grateful for the city of Wayzata and for the fam- ily in blue,” Shawn Mathews said. “There’s not one day that’s easy, but we just appreciate everything that people have done and we’re just go- ing to keep going forward.” Feb. 14 - A trailer valued at $4,500 was reported as stolen from a parking lot along the 800 block of Highway 169.
