Severe Weather Emergencies
The City has 13 emergency alert sirens in strategic locati ons
to alert residents in the event of a weather or man-made
emergency. If the sirens are acti vated for an actual tornado or
disaster emergency, residents are asked not to call 911, but to
follow the verbal instructi ons broadcast from the sirens. The
current siren testi ng program will allow for a more eff ecti ve ac-
ti vati on system, greater maintenance abiliti es and more exten-
sive siren coverage throughout the City. The siren system can
be used for a number of warning needs including civil defense,
hazardous material accidents and storm-related emergencies.
The City acti vated the siren system in the past when the City
received a tornado warning from the Nati onal Weather Service.
The sirens ran for approximately 3 minutes and were followed
by a pre-recorded verbal message instructi ng people outdoors
to seek shelter due to a tornado warning. The system func-
ti oned well and provided warning of the impending storm to
residents.
