Public Safety

Pete Siebert , appointed as Fire Chief this past spring , discusses the March 15 freight train derailment in Lake Forest and the partnerships in place that deliver service and safety day in and day out . “ The safety of our residents is the number once concern for the Lake Forest Fire Department . We are continually seeking avenues to provide and improve upon the best service possible .”
All City departments are ready to respond to emergencies taking place with the community 24-7 . In the case of the train derailment , Police , Fire , Public Works from Lake Forest , MABAS ( Mutual Aid response )/ HazMat Operations and Union Pacific Railroad collaborated closely and quickly .
All Fire Department members are trained to deal with hazardous materials , and continue to be educated . Chief Siebert stated “ As first responders , we have access to an app called AskRail , a valuable resource .” AskRail is a safety tool that provides professionals with immediate access to accurate , timely data about what type of and what quantities of hazardous materials a railcar is carrying . “ The first three HazMat technicians were on site within 15 minutes and quickly deemed the situation to be stable . 14 more techs responded to the scene within an hour of the accident ,” he added .
The Fire Department is in the process of updating the City ’ s Emergency Operating Plan . The City ’ s Emergency Operations Center is located at Fire Station 2 , 1111 S . Telegraph Road , and all City departments are annually trained on emergency operations management on an annual basis .
Chief Siebert met with residents following the accident and commented that “ It is encouraging to hear the genuine concern of neighbors who care about the well-being of others . Many other communities have lost that connection .”
