focus on the upgrades first . I can do the upgrades while you are sorting out the fleets . One more thing before we round this out , what will be happening to Alloun ?”
“ Alloun will most likely be put to death , especially with all the evidence we have against her ,” the General said .
Jackal disliked the idea , but she knew that she had to go with it .
Ten Months Later
Jackal got up from her seat within her office at the Federation . Because of the success of Ten , she was asked to help roll Ten out across the marine ships . They received the upgrades on both her ship and the marine ships as quickly as possible . In the meantime , her crew from the Chimera were assigned other duties to help with the project . Ed still trailed behind her , eager to learn as much as possible . He became Jackal ’ s second in command . It was unheard of that a trainee was made second , but with his quick progress and experience , Ed was the most fit for the role .
She yawned and stretched her arms , blinking as her tired eyes paused to read through the datagrams for each ship on one computer , glad of the bigger screen to contrast that of her droid . Everything was going according to plan . Ten only made a couple of systems fall over during the install process , but they soon found the issues and brought them back online again .
She heard a knock at the door , interrupting her thoughts . She looked over to see the General standing in the doorway to her office .
“ Hello , sir . Come in . How may I help you ?” she asked , quickly rising to her feet .
The General motioned Jackal to sit down . “ Oh , no , no . I don ’ t need anything right now , but I saw your light on and wondered why you were still here .”
“ I ’ m just making sure the datagrams for the fleet are suitable with Ten on board ,” Jackal replied . The dark circles under her eyes became more pronounced as she spoke .
The General nodded , happy to have made the decision for Jackal to head the Ten project . In the ten months that had passed between the first tests on the Chimera and the most recent ones , she had only found a couple of small bugs that weren ’ t too difficult to handle .
There was an awkward silence that filled the room before the General spoke again .
“ I also wanted to say that Alloun ’ s sentence will be carried out midday tomorrow ,” he said . “ I will need you there as the other Lieutenant Generals are otherwise engaged .”
“ Of course ,” Jackal said , lowering her head . “ I feel bad about this whole situation , but she risked a couple of hundred people ’ s lives for what ? Revenge for my orders to round up and kill her family ?” she asked .
The General looked at Jackal then confirmed her thoughts , “ It was exactly that – Revenge .”
