THE POWER OF music management An interview with Herman “The Kidd” Watson, manager for the legendary rap artist Rappin 4-Tay SM: I hear you are about to go on tour right now with the legendary Rappin 4-Tay. Can you give us the 4-1-1 on that? HW: Yes, I am on tour right now! We just started this new tour with Rappin’ 4-Tay. Right now I got a bit of a break until it starts. My next thing I will be in Vegas on the 20th, I got a movie with Matt Damon, The Bourne Identity movie. Me and a couple of friends we did Straight Outta Compton last year. This year we’re going to do that and plus the Tunnel Vision film. I got 4-Tay’s music on there, you know and I helped get Spice 1’s music on there. I will be attending the VIP movie premiere with G-Eazy and the concert. SM: It sounds like you have a lot of different projects that you are working on. What is your actual job title? HW: You know I don’t know anymore. I came in as an artist. I’ve been with 4-Tay since I was very young. I am 25 now. We met when I was like 11. So I came in as an artist in 2012 or 2013; and around that time I took over managing 4-Tay and doing all these big events like Coachella. We got to see the Tupac hologram; we were practically on stage when that was shown. There’s many things that we have done since we started collaborating. But now this year I will be releasing my own music. I have a new single with Snoop Dogg, G. Battles, my group The Intercepterz and 4-Tay. We will be dropping that right before the Grammys. We will be attending the Grammys again this year on the 15th of February. And I have shows all in between all of this. We are over flooded with bookings. Last year I couldn’t even record. I had an EP with rest in peace Ikey Owen’s, he’s the grammy-winning keyboardist of The Mars Volta. He played with Jack White and The White Stripes. He was on tour with them when he passed. He gave me 12 beats. So now I intend to put that out and give money to his family. I have been making music for a long time. I came in with a group. Shout out to The Intercepterz. We came in as a group and we all have individual fanbases. Sometimes if 4-Tay can’t perform or if something happens, we go up there and do what we do. SM: How many stage names do you have? Do you go by The Kidd? HW: Everyone knows me as Herm. I go by “The Kidd” too. I have many different names. Suga Free named me “Skateboard Herm.” 4-Tay calls me “The Kidd”. I guess everyone calls me “The Kidd” (laughing) SM: Being an artist and managing Rappin’ 4-Tay, do you also act as a manager for yourself? HW: Yeah, I think I have always managed myself. Even when 4-Tay was not doing too much, we were still doing a lot! So I thought, “if we add 4-Tay’s name to this, this could be something that benefits both of us.” And that’s kind of what happened! We did Rock the Bells, we did Paid Dues, we did Coachella. We did EDC. I did way too many shows. I just took a break from doing my own stuff and hyped up 4-Tay. I made it about 4-Tay and his career just blossomed really well. We have a comic book, we have a new studio album. We have features that are crazy right now for his new album. His relationship with Drake and all that happened. In regards to “The Playaz Club.” I threw a mansion party with him. We basically brought back “The Playaz Club”. We did that in Beverly Hills and I had just about everyone there, from The Row Doggs to Yukmouth to Mike Tyson. It was nice to see all the homies just repping the place. It was really cool. That’s how I started the year off. SM: I recently went on theplayazclub.com and I saw the promo for your upcoming mansion party you are throwing again. Is this going to be an annual bash? HW: If you go to www.theplayazclub. com you will see that we have re-vamped 4-Tay’s “Playaz Club” and made it into a membership. You can sign up, become a member and you get to come to my parties exclusively. Or, on one of the other cool things that I do; like this new G-Eazy movie, the Cannabis Cup with Wiz Khalifa or what have you. I take a couple members with me, and show them a really good time. They get to hang with me for a day. It all goes back to my show. I have a show coming out on Netflix its called “A Day in The Life.” The Row Doggs filmed it. Shout out to them. They will be releasing it soon. First it will come out on the internet, and then it will be on Hulu and then streaming on Netflix. We’ll see how it goes. SM: Oh my! I had no idea that you had all of these other projects going on. To me, it seemed like first and foremost you are the manager for 4-Tay. HW: He’s had many managers. The thing is, me and him are like family. We have chemistry so it’s not all about business. It’s really
