Stacey Auld
MEDIA STUDIES AND
PRODUCTION
Her interest in photography started
off by accident, attending shows
with just a disposable camera and
eventually a digital camera, where she
would snap every moment of the gig.
Stacey said “Live music, especially,
is the best thing in the world and
photography is a great way of
capturing those moments. Another
photographer saw my shots and told
me to invest in a DSLR; thankfully
my parents bought me a camera for
my 19th birthday. The tricky part
was then figuring out how to get the
DSLR into the venues. Luckily, I had
the help of other photographers who
showed me the ropes.”
Stacey started her own webzine,
Music Box Unwinds - www.
musicboxunwinds.co.uk. Following
the set-up of the webzine, she
contacted some of her favourite
band’s PR agents and management
THE STUDENT VOICE: EDITION 2
and got her first photography pass
for a Californian band called Finch.
Starting off in small venues, it took
some time to build up the trust of the
musicians and their management.
Stacey’s perseverance paid off and
she is now allowed access to venues
like The Hydro, Hampden Park and
Sunderland Stadium of Light.
Stacey added “I’ve since been lucky
enough to photograph some of my
heroes such as Fleetwood Mac,
Blondie, Bruce Springsteen and I
was also hand-picked by Red Hot
Chili Peppers as their preferred
photographer for their show in
Sunderland. It’s a very tough industry
but it’s definitely worth sticking in
and proving to not only yourself,
but the other photographers and PR
agencies that you have the right to be
there as well and can work in such a
demanding industry.”
