GIG REVIEW
by Martin Currie
QUEENS OF THE STONE
AGE’S MICHAEL SCHUMAN
TOOK HIS NEW THREE-PIECE
BAND TO GLASGOW’S KING
TUT’S THIS SUMMER ON THE
TOUR OF THEIR ‘THE GREAT
PRETENDERS’ ALBUM.
They mesmerised their crowd
for 14 songs and considering
their one-night stop at the
intimate venue didn’t even
sell out, this indie pop band is
probably the best kept secret
out there right now.
Their unique sound – which has
been likened to a mix of The
38
Beatles, T-Rex, David Bowie
and The Zombies – results in
chilled out singalongs that
are completed different from
Schuman’s QOTSA.
Singles ‘Death is a Girl’ and
‘Any Emotions’ were well
received, as expected, but
their excellent cover of
Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’
threatened to steal the
show from their own tracks.
‘Freakout!’ and ‘Majik Marker’
finished the show before the
band stuck around once they
were off stage and joined their
fans in the downstairs bar.
The trio really looked to enjoy
themselves in Glasgow and
surely they will not have to
wait too long to receive the
widespread appeal that their
music deserves.
Admittedly, I hadn’t heard
much about Mini Mansions
before I went along to the
gig, but they came so highly
recommended by my mates
that I had to see what all the
fuss was about.
Now I know.
