//Inspiring Achievement Paul Flood HNC Social Care Kilmarnock Campus “I volunteered as a Sessional Worker with Who Cares? Scotland, before coming to college in 2011. I also worked with North Ayrshire Council within the residential unit, dealing with young people in care. To gain a full-time post, I needed more qualifications, so this led me to study the HNC Social Care at Kilmarnock Campus. During my studies I learned a lot about myself. Studying was tough; as well as attending college; I also undertook a work placement, continuing with North Ayrshire Council on a part-time basis. Although the experience was exhausting and challenging, it was extremely invaluable, exciting and rewarding. My time at college benefitted me hugely. I was empowered with the knowledge that I needed, and this helped me to understand the complexities of working with young people with a vast range of needs. Although it was hard work it was extremely worthwhile and also lots of fun. My lecturers were very supportive too. I am currently employed with Achnamara Care Home in Saltcoats. I work with young people who are looked after away from home, in a residential setting. My job requires me to liaise with Social Workers, arrange contact with families and generally provide a caring, safe, nurturing environment for young people to stay. Coming to college has been inspiring, and I hope to improve myself further, by undertaking the SVQ Level 4 course, and working towards a senior position within North Ayrshire Council. I hope to fit in a course in sign language too.” Jacqueline McLellan, Care and Early Years Lecturer comments “Paul was an evening class student who THE STUDENT VOICE: EDITION 1 “ Coming to college has been inspiring, and I hope to improve myself further” Paul Flood’s time at Kilmarnock Campus has inspired him to seek higher achievement. has shown an inspirational level of commitment to supporting young people in care. He has achieved so much in his time at Kilmarnock Campus, including a trip to Mount Everest Base Camp, where he took a young person in care with him. Paul dedicated himself to the project, implementing training plans, attending training weekends, and supporting the young person, physically and emotionally and raising over £7,500 in the process. Paul has been an inspirational student, and his achievements are down to his hard work, his enthusiasm and his passion for helping others.” 5
