D. Purpose of Grades
A grade is a recorded score derived from an assessment or
assessments. The purpose of grades may be summarized as
follows:
1. To provide information to students in regard to their
proficiency towards mastery of the standards.
2. To provide information to teachers on the students’ level
of mastery of the content/skill.
3. To communicate information to parents about student
achievement and performance in school.
4. To document student performance for transcripts and to
evaluate the effectiveness of school programs
E. The Grade Composition
In order to represent an accurate measure of what a student
knows, understands and is able to do, the academic quarter
grade needs to be based primarily on work that is evaluated for
appropriate content, understanding and correctness, at a time
when the student has had sufficient instruction and practice to
be responsible for the material. Summative assessments will
therefore be the primary constituent of the quarter grade.
No behavior and conduct attributes will be included in the
academic grade.
F. Gradebook Updating
Summative assignments will be entered into the gradebook
within seven days of collection.
Certificates of participation, “letters” and/or special awards are
presented to deserving team members upon completion of the
season of that sport.
Team members must follow all guidelines, rules and regulations,
as outlined by the Athletic Director, at the beginning of each
season.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Brother Rice High School recognizes the importance of extra‐curricular
activities in a well‐rounded high school experience and provides the
opportunity for students to participate in a variety of programs.
Participation in all extra‐curricular programs, including varsity, junior
varsity, and freshmen athletics, service organizations, and special
interest clubs is considered a privilege and not a right of Brother Rice
students. Therefore, membership on any team or in any club is
contingent upon a student's satisfactory academic and behavioral
comportment. The privilege of participating in any extra‐curricular
program may be revoked by the Administration for serious violation of
any campus rule or Student Code of Conduct.

Team members must have a physical exam, parent/guardian’s
consent and maintain a 2.00 or better GPA. Quarter GPAs are
used for the first and third quarters, semester GPAs are used for
the first and second semesters.

Eligibility Requirements:
In order for a student to participate in extra‐curricular activities at
Brother Rice, each student must maintain at least a 2.00 GPA at
every grading period. Failure to do so will make the student
ineligible to participate in all extra‐curricular activities. The
student may regain his academic status provided that he obtains
satisfactory reports in all subject areas after a specified period of
probation. A repeat of ineligible activity will result in exclusion for
the rest of the current grading period. Future eligibility will be
determined at the end of the grading period.
If a student is unable to attend school for any reason, it will affect
that student’s eligibility to participate in extra‐curricular. Refer to
Absences and Extra‐Curricular Activities for more information.
HONOR SOCIETIES
Invitation to apply for membership to honor societies is based
upon requirements established by specific honor societies. A
Faculty Honors Advisory Council appointed by the Principal will
review applications and make recommendations of who is to be
accepted based on commitment to academics, leadership,
Christian service, and commitment to the mission of Brother Rice:
Respect; Integrity; Character; and Excellence. These standards
must be maintained for continuing membership.
Any student found in violation of the Brother Rice Student Code
of Conduct may lose the privilege of membership in all honor
societies, including non‐curricular societies.
