WELCOME It’s hard to believe that a whole year has passed since I first joined you all in UNITED, Calvary’s High School Ministry. It has been a genuine blessing, and a lot of fun, getting to know so many of you this past year as we have strived together to be a youth group that BOLDLY prays and BOLDLY obeys. I am looking forward to another year of deep- ening relationships – old and new – as we follow Jesus together. Our series this year, FOLLOW, comes from the Gospel of Luke. In light of our series title, I want to take the opportunity to invite you to join us this year, whether you are an incoming freshman, a returning student, or not yet a regular part of UNITED. Dis- cover what happens when we re- spond to Jesus’ call to each of us; a call to come and follow. Many of us identify with Peter’s cry upon understanding Jesus’ holiness in Luke 5:8, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” Yet, in response to Peter’s feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness, Jesus says “Don’t be afraid, from now on you will fish for people.” Luke tells us that the disciples left everything behind to follow Jesus and to learn from him as their teacher. And so we invite you to come to UNITED and allow Jesus to teach us together. Will you join us? We do not merely want to talk at you about Jesus. We want to be 2 like Jesus and meet you where you are at, calling you to follow him and to learn from him to “have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Towards that end, we believe God has led us to reformat the way we spend our small group time to better facili- tate true discipleship. Rather than being purely discussion-based, our small groups will now be structured to allow leaders to walk with students through what it looks like to daily follow Jesus Christ. Our aim is to emphasize practical action steps for disciple- ship rather than simply discuss- ing our faith. I couldn’t be more excited to begin this new year of ministry with all of you! Our Fall Kick-Off is Sunday, Sep- tember 10, from 6:00pm-8:30pm in Room 208. We will then con- tinue meeting on Sunday nights for UNITED in the same room for the rest of the school year. We will spend our time together in worship, receiving a message from God’s Word, and enjoying fun, meaningful interaction and guided growth in the newly formatted discipleship groups. Other exciting events scheduled throughout the year are described for you in this brochure. Let us FOLLOW Jesus together in this new year of ministry; an adven- ture awaits! In Christ, Josh Karhan Pastoral Staff, High School
