I am struck by
the number
of innovative
and successful
businesses we
have locally.
At some point
in their history
Jo Churchill
they will have
been founded by an entrepreneur,
who had an idea, took risks and
persevered in building their business.
I am determined that we continue to
encourage the entrepreneurial spirit,
particularly among young people.
The central aim of the modern
Industrial Strategy is to make the UK
the best place to start and grow a
business. The Global Entrepreneurship
and Development Institute ranked the
UK as the second most entrepreneurial
economy in Europe and the fourth
most entrepreneurial in the world.
Technological change is happening at
ever increasing speed and is having
an ever growing impact on our lives.
It is vital for the UK’s future economic
prosperity that we lead this change.
Harnessing the ideas of entrepreneurs
young and old will be central to this.
Interestingly, an independent review
into young entrepreneurship in
England is being led by the Prince’s
Trust. The purpose of the review is to
seek to better understand the specifi c
barriers and opportunities young
entrepreneurs face and what more can
be done by private, public and third
sectors to support them to start and
grow a business.
Starting a business is never easy
and involves risk, but can be highly
rewarding. Once a business has got off
the ground it is not the end but merely
the beginning. An entrepreneur’s
work is never done. I therefore
welcome that government has
supported and invested in the creation
of a network of 38 Growth Hubs,
providing businesses across England
with tailored advice and support.
The Business Support Helpline also
provides information and guidance to
people across England.
Ensuring we continue to support
young entrepreneurs is vital to not
only continued economic prosperity,
but also to enabling young people to
fulfi l their potential.
