The Flyer Street Forge Workshops Stowmarket Lawn Tennis Club As we come to the end of the winter season, the teams at Stowmarket Lawn Tennis Club who play in the local Ipswich leagues are all starting to wind up their seasons. The county has a well established winter schedule, and Stowmarket has fantastic representation with 9 ladies teams, 2 men’s teams as well as a men’s team in the winter fl ood lit league. Defi nitely punching about its weight in the country. The Club will shortly hold its AGM where the year ahead is discussed and agreed by members who also get together and enjoy a sociable drink after the meeting concludes. Although it doesn’t sound like the most exciting evening, the Chairman Stuart Beaton always has pleasure in thanking the keen volunteers at the Club as well as discussing the strong membership base and healthy fi nancial position of the Club. Stowmarket’s Tennis Club has recently appointed a Diversity and Inclusion offi cer with the aim of reaching out to the local community and trying to make the game as accessible to as many people as possible. If you have always wanted to play the game but are not sure about joining a club, please do contact us. We have lots of ways people can get involved. The Club is run by its members and we would also very much like to hear from people looking to help volunteer in the running and management of the Club. We will be de-installing our winter dome. The weather proof facility is one of only a few in the county and provides weather proof tennis all year round. It started when a group of people, themselves with physical disabilities, their families, friends and interested professionals formed a committee to lobby for a workshop to offer experience in woodwork, craft and computer skills to adults with various disabilities. We provide a day service Monday to Fridays for adults with physical, sensory or learning disabilities, including those with multiple disabilities and/or mild mental health problems. We are accredited by Suffolk County Council, which means our services are safe, secure, legal and sustainable. We offer the following activities: • Woodwork • Woodturning • Art, craft • Cookin • Horticultur • Computer In keeping with our beginnings, many of our clients are involved in making saleable high quality wooden, craft and horticulture products as well as bespoke commissions. We are currently selling our products at Nutshells in Stowupland and at The Little Gift Shop in Thornham Walks and we are very grateful for the opportunity to showcase our items at these outlets. We attend various shows throughout the year to promote and sell to the general public at which we are well received, particularly when people hear our story and understand our ethos. We have a superb team of active volunteers who bring a wide range of skills and experience to Street Forge. Volunteers bring a huge amount of ‘added value’ to us, be it providing an extra pair of hands or a listening ear. No two clients are the same at Street Forge. Activities are varied due to our clients coming from many different backgrounds. This generates a lively social mix which produces an active, bustling atmosphere, giving a heart and warmth to Street Forge for all who attend. Although we are a charity we do have staff to pay and overheads to meet. Therefore, we do charge for attendance but this cost can be recovered through local councils or self-funded. For all who attend our service, the aim is to enhance their quality of life and to enable people coming to Street Forge to achieve their full potential through tuition and guidance from our wonderful staff and volunteers. If you know of anybody who may benefi t by coming to Street Forge or could help as a volunteer, in the fi rst instance please telephone the offi ce on 01379 678543 for further information.
