Tydemans Then and The Now Flyer Tydemans Then and Now Godfrey in the early 20th century. By 1925 Mr Godfrey was running the business on his own until the early 1930s when the property and business was taken over by Joe Fidler, eventually passing to his son Roy by 1959. George Tydeman fi rst appears in Stowmarket in an 1858 Post Offi ce Directory as Silversmith and Jeweller in Ipswich Street and occupied the same premises for nearly 100 years until 1956 when they re-located to 36 Bury Street. Tydeman’s Jewellers stayed at this site for just over forty years until they had the chance to take over the more prominent corner property of 1 Bury Street in 1997. The corner property was a gentleman’s outfi tters for over one-hundred years initially as Denis Curtis in 1898, becoming a partnership with Percy Steeped in history and making history is a way to describe this iconic local business. The brief history we have documented here is but a small slice of an illustrious past stretching back to at least 1858. This predates the American Civil War. For over 160 years lucky maidens of Stowmarket have been given engagement rings from G Tydeman Jewellers. This is connected to making history with their service of re- modelling jewellery. This is a service where old, broken jewellery or precious heirlooms from the past are crafted into heirlooms for the future. Tydeman’s expert jewellers can remodel your old or broken jewellery into something beautiful and contemporary that your loved ones will cherish for a lifetime and pass on to future generations. This bespoke service follows three simple steps. After an initial consultation where ideas are discussed the experts at G Tydeman Jewellers will turn your ideas to a workable design. Once you are completely happy Roy Fidler closed the business and retired in 1997, at which point Mr Heller of Tydemans took the opportunity to move to the more prominent corner position from their previous shop in Bury Street. Postscript:- The small cannon barrels that stand against opposite walls of the lane off Bury Street beside Tydeman’s Jewellers are believed to have been made by James Wood’s Stowmarket Foundry in about 1800, during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. These cannons were probably ‘casting failures’ and were used to protect the brickwork at the narrow entrance to the alleyway from being knocked by the horse and waggons going to the Woods Foundry yard at the rear. with the design expert craftspeople will use skills handed down generations to manufacture something truly original, totally bespoke over a four week period. The results have been stunning and Joseph and the team will gladly show you examples of previous work. Of course there is a lot more to Tydeman’s than this service.
