business on his own until the early
1930s when the property and business
was taken over by Joe Fidler, eventually
passing to his son Roy by 1959.
George Tydeman fi rst appears in
Stowmarket in an 1858 Post Offi ce

Ipswich Street and occupied the same
premises for nearly 100 years until
1956 when they re-located to 36 Bury
Street. Tydeman’s Jewellers stayed at
this site for just over forty years until
they had the chance to take over the

Steeped in history and making history
is a way to describe this iconic local
business. The brief history we have
documented here is but a small slice of
an illustrious past stretching back to at
least 1858. This predates the American
Civil War.
For over 160 years lucky maidens

opportunity to move to the more
prominent corner position from their
previous shop in Bury Street.

have been made by James Wood’s
Stowmarket Foundry in about 1800,
during the time of the Napoleonic
Wars. These cannons were probably
‘casting failures’ and were used to
protect the brickwork at the narrow
entrance to the alleyway from being
knocked by the horse and waggons
going to the Woods Foundry yard at
the rear.
