Dots and Dashes The first telegraph was invented in 1837. In 1838 Samuel Finley Breese Morse created a more successful commercial telegraph that sent messages using a special code - Morse code. Before this invention, most of the messages that were sent across long distances were often delivered by horse or visually through flags and later, mechanical systems, which were called semaphore telegraphs. Unfortunately, these systems were not successful because the receiver had to be close enough to see the sender and they also couldn’t be used during the middle of the night. I converted Josef’s original story into seven pages of morse code printed on legal sized paper. This system was never intende d to communicate long stories, however, it was an interesting contrast when comparing it to other systems of communication. 22
