Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) refer to
an increasingly common condition lately among
patients in different age groups coming to our
dental offices. The authors dedicated this book
to Dr Laszlo Schwartz, who founded the first
academic TMJ center in the US. This book is
divided into five sections and 17 chapters. In the
first section, there are five chapters which tackle the
sensory mechanisms of orofacial pain, masticatory
myofacial pain, intracapsular inflammation and
degeneration, and comorbid conditions. The
three chapters of the second section explain the
evolution of the pain condition, who will respond
positively to treatment and who will come to
experience chronic pain. The three chapters of
section three discuss the results obtained in a
series of studies on the TMJ biomechanics, normal
and pathological.
