Stillwater Style Winter 2018 - Page 26

Go-to drinks for the HOLIDAYS BY TIM AHRENS | STILLWATER STYLE I remember watching “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” as a little kid each Christmas. It probably took me way too long to figure out why the dad kept talking about drinking too much egg nog – frankly, I thought he was trying to watch his weight. Years later, adult me has grown to love holiday drinks. My default is spiked egg nog, and I tried a new recipe to share with you during holiday get-togethers with family or a lonely night watching the Hallmark Channel (don’t worry, I won’t judge). Top pick: Salted Caramel Egg Nog This has become a recent love of mine since discovering the seasonal salted caramel whiskey Crown Royal puts out this time of year. I tried it in October and immediately fell in love with it; it’s pretty smooth if you drink it straight, it’s a good 26 Stillwater Style | WINTER 2018 mixer and has just enough of a caramel- maple taste to enjoy without it being overpowering or too sweet. I didn’t get around to making a caramel apple drink or spiked apple cider from recipes I found when I spent October watching horror movies and enjoying increasingly fall temperatures, but I wanted to find a recipe to use with my newfound go-to. Lo and behold, Crown Royal published a salted caramel egg nog recipe. SALTED CARMEL EGG NOG Ingredients • 1.5 oz. Crown Royal Salted Caramel (3-to-1 egg nog to Crown Royal Salted Caramel ratio (depending on how strong a drink you want to make, one shot of whiskey is about 1.5 oz) • 4.5 oz. egg nog • nutmeg (optional) • 1 oz. caramel Directions: • Shake all ingredients (except nutmeg) with ice • Strain it into a glass • If desired, use nutmeg as garnish and serve.
