Graphic Design

During a study of proportions and technical drawing , specifically using current technologies for graphic design , 5th grade students completed a study of Leonardo da Vinci and his works . They learned of his study of the human body and his focus on proportions and creating realistic pieces of art . Not only were students able to see the importance and success of focusing on proportions and being precise , but they were also able to begin interpreting da Vinci ’ s purpose and analyzing the intended effect on the viewer . Students worked to then create a sketchnote of a digital design that they would use to provoke an intended response from the reader using a sketchbook app on their iPads .

Properties of Matter

Second grade students used sketch notebooks to record their findings as part of an arts-integrated science investigation of how heating and cooling can change the properties of different materials . Students were charged with finding a way to organize their initial sketches , hypotheses , and results , and communicating both the properties themselves and the ways in which they changed through the use of colors , shapes , and lines .
