“Because we went over the phases so many times, we remember them vividly.” “It caused us to need to know the cell division process off the top of our heads.” “It helped us visualize meiosis and mitosis better.” “We had to really understand it first, then make it.” “The true challenge of STEAM is to advocate truly cross-curricular learning rather than simply adding in some art projects. The real world isn’t segregated by discipline the way the school curriculum is.” There were some students who were anxious to get back to “regular art class” rather than learning about science during art. This is strong evidence in support of “art for art’s sake.” It is important to note that integration shouldn’t be happening in the art classroom alone. True integration requires a balanced emphasis on a variety of disciplines, with equally rigorous educational activities and multiple assessments. The challenge of STEAM is to advocate truly cross-curricular learning rather than simply adding in some art projects. The real world isn’t segregated by discipline in the way that the school curriculum is. Outside of the school building, art and design are thoroughly integrated with all parts of life. By designing units that emphasize whole-brain learning and real-world situations with artistic processes rather than products, teachers can stimulate meaningful creative expression and promote the value of the arts in education.
