FROM THE FIELD FROM DIRT ROADS TO FLYING CARS BY LISA BECKER “I bet there will be flying cars someday,” said Jaden “There is no way that will ever happen!” exclaimed Madi. “Why not? If airplanes can fly and have wheels, you know that cars can,” he continued. “Besides it would get you to St. Paul a lot faster.” “Right, so then there will be floating roadways and cops flying around in the sky…” Madi says skeptically. “When I was your age we didn’t have cell phones, email addresses…,” I start. But before I continue the eye rolling and groaning takes me back to my youth, when adults would say something similar to me. I have never known what it was like to live without a television. My students have never known what life was like before computers and the internet. As a middle school art teacher, I believe it is important for kids to understand where we come from and what our world looked like in the past. When students start to understand how rapidly things have changed in the last 20 years, they start to imagine and realize that change is inevitable. Change will happen with their generation and each generation A drawing from Ms. Becker’s 8th grade art students 25
