Developing empathy and awareness through digital animation provides learners with a new outlet for expression Since 2000, stop motion animation has been a huge component of my high school and middle school art program and I am thrilled that the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards is presently at work writing a new standard, that of Media Arts, which will include digital imaging, interactive design, game design, and virtual design, to name a few. This is of particular interest to me as I teach all my classes in a computer lab and rarely work with traditional art materials. Over the last twelve years, I have seen student’s interest in animation, video games, film and music grow exponentially. Because of this interest I have chosen to include more of these categories in my class offerings. Animation appeals to multiple intelligences and a broad variety of learners. It allows students to apply their most able intelligence, while also developing and utilizing all of the other intelligences. My school district, as well as many others across the county, has put in place an anti-bullying program, in order to prevent or reduce bullying. Bullying is the intimidation of a person, by another person(s), repeated over time, which causes the individual to fear for their mental of physical 22
