Defensive Walking What is defensive walking? Essentially this is ensuring that you are aware of your surroundings and are alert to the hazard of falling whilst carrying out your duties. There are a few simple actions you can take: Scan ahead to know what is coming next, be aware of: • Fixed obstructions/ blind spots/ corners • Objects on the floor • Slippery surfaces • Uneven surfaces • Other work activity • Use proper speed for the conditions (the faster you walk, the easier it is to fall, especially on slippery surfaces). • Be prepared for the unexpected (things other people do or unknown hazardous conditions). • Avoid carrying loads which obstruct your vision or cause you to be unbalanced • Report any potential slip, trip, fall hazards immediately. Never just walk past thinking someone else will report them or even worse that it’s someone else’s problem – one day it could be your problem, for all the wrong reasons. Naturally the goal is not to slip, trip or fall, however the possibility of a fall still exists, by following the simple techniques below you could significantly reduce the impact of a slip, trip or fall and the resulting injury. • Tuck your chin in, turn your head, & throw an arm up. It’s better to land on your arms than your head • While falling, twist or roll your body to the side. It’s better to land on your bottom & side than on your back • Keep your wrist, knees and elbows bent. • Do not try to break the fall with your hand and elbows When falling the objective is to have as many square inches of your body contact the surface as possible, thus spreading out the impact of the fall Walking safely is Your choice. No one else can do it for you! REMEMBER: When on patrol using radios . . . STOP – TALK – WALK Integrity | Vigilance | Helpfulness www.securitas.ie 35 page
