Safety First
Behavioural Safety at Work
Encouraging safe behaviour within the workplace is crucial to the effective management of health and
safety. Whilst management systems and operational procedures are essential to the structure of a
recognised H&S program, without the basics in place of people taking personal responsibility seriously and
“playing their part” to think about safety each day, then incidents will continue to occur. This is the reality
of how to reduce many of the incidents that occur – personal responsibility and adherence to simple
behavioural safety rules.
Key benefits
Significant organisational benefits have been associated with the introduction of behavioural safety
programmes. Not only restricted to health and safety, benefits include:
•
•
•
Reduction in number of accidents caused by inappropriate behaviour
Opportunity for management and workforce participation
Behaviours and actions influence culture through attitudes and perceptions
It is vitally important that all personnel within the organization demonstrate a good understanding of their
health and safety responsibility through awareness and an active approach to ensuring improved safety
standards are maintained. This can apply to both site based personnel and those operating in the
Company’s office locations.
Embodying this message the Safety First reminds us all to actively make a difference and that
each of us is empowered to take action to ensure work is performed safely.
