lence resources bee safe/family vio Domestic Violence Domestic Violence is defined as a significant or intimate relationship in which one person abuses the other person. It can occur in any of the following relationships: a couple living together or not living together, a couple that is married, divorced, separated, or not married, a couple that has children or does not have children, or a heterosexual or homosexual couple. Violence within any of these relationships may take on any of the following forms: • verbal abuse • emotional abuse • physical abuse • denial of rights • intimidation • isolation • sexual abuse Effects of Domestic Violence on Children • Research shows that approximately 50% of the men who batter their wives also abuse their children. • Over 30% of women who abuse their children are abused wives. Women who are abused by their spouse may vent their rage and frustration on their children. • Children may become accidental victims of spouse abuse when they attempt to stop a fight. • Children who witness abuse tend to become abusers and victims in adulthood. Children growing up in violent homes often are behind developmentally. Often they d
