The 1940 election , in which Franklin Delano Roosevelt defeated Wendell Willkie to win an unprecedented third term as President of the United States , produced an interesting assortment of campaign pins with anti-Roosevelt sentiments . Notable phrases included “ We Don ’ t Want Eleanor Either ” and “ Dr . Jekyll of Hyde Park .”

The Prohibition Party was founded in 1869 and is still in existence today . It has been most famously known for its strong opposition to “ intoxicating beverages ,” as stated in its 1872 party platform , but through the years the party has also stood for social issues such as labor reform and suffrage for women . Clarence B . DeHart , a resident of Mariners Harbor , ran for State Assembly as a Prohibition Party candidate in 1911 . His campaign card emphasized the party ’ s anti-liquor stance , stating “ Opposed to ALL evil , the SALOON is the ROOT , help us get rid of the root .”
