Increasing Scientific Literacy and Confidence: Immersing students in STEAM (continued)
The week that followed consisted of a thought-provoking and
highly immersive program for high school students that delved
into world issues, current innovations and advancements in
STEM. Students were able to discuss bigger picture concerns,
while also learning how First Nation Peoples are affected by
world issues such as climate change, and discovering the Game
Changers and Change Makers, past and present, in the scientific
community. Dissections were also on the cards, with a number of
students participating in comparative anatomy sessions with one
of the Museum’s resident mammologists.
2019 will see schools looking to the stars and delving into the
innovations and challenges of current and future missions with
the National Science Week schools theme of Destination Moon:
more missions, more science. Embracing this theme and the
diversity of STEM fields, the 2019 Science Festival will ignite
student’s imagination and encourage them to continue to explore
science in new and engaging ways.
