s sTaBILIS This day will never be the same without Indomitus Shakespeare said, “If music is the food of love, play on.” This past Valentine’s Day, as usual, Grey College showcased its romantic side in the most authentic way possible, but what can be more authentic and romantic than mak- ing the girls from our sister schools weak at the knees with angel-like voices and charming smiles? Each year, the Indomitus vocal ensemble has a mission to fill the air as well as the girls’ hearts with love and this year was no different. On the 13th of February, Indomitus visited Eunice, Oranje and Sentraal to perform their love songs for the girls. The boys performed well- known songs such as ‘Shape Of You’ by Ed Sheeran, ‘Be My For- ever’ by Cristina Perry and ‘Home’ by Philip Philips. Mr. Davel and his boys were very well prepared and did well considering the fact that it was only their first performance of the year. If music is indeed the food of love, it is safe to say that Indomitus will continue to play on and most importantly, will continue to spread the love, not only on Valentine’s Day, but through the years to come. The other percussion group of the school, the Grey Drumline, was also there to add additional The Marimba Band, performing their art. “Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.” We gladly trust these groups with our beautiful treasure, a gift for everyone. Art historian Robert Farris Thompson describes the youth from the South Bronx in the early 1970s as “English- speaking blacks from Barbados” like Grandmaster Flash, “black Jamaicans” like DJ Kool Herc who introduced the rhythms from salsa music, as well as Afro conga and bongo drums, as well as many who emulated the sounds of Tito Puente and Willie Colón. These youths mixed these influences with existing musical styles associated with African-Americans prior to the 1970s. 5
