Drama group
continues to go
from strength to
strength
At Grey College, it is easy to see how
different pupils excel in the various
activities offered by the school.
Some will go on to become
great sportsmen, others will go
on to become world-renowned
scientists and businessmen and
some may even go on to become top
performers of the arts.
As has always been the case,
Grey boys have showcased their
fantastic abilities in all aspects, be it
on the sports pitch, in the classroom
or on the stage, and for the drama
department at Grey College, this has
also been no different.
The drama group of Grey
College has managed to reach
sensational heights over the past
year. This was also the first time
ever that Grey College entered a
drama group for the Eisteddfod
competition in May 2018, adding
to the impressive ATKV victory in
2017, showing that Grey College
has yet another group to showcase
all of its abilities.
The group has grown since the
start of its formation by more than
doubling the number of learners
who want to join. This growth
not only shows how quickly the
group as a whole is growing but
also shows how it has managed
to attract the attention of the Grey
gentlemen.
The drama team at Grey
College can be exceptionally proud
of all the hard work that is being
put in to ensure that this group
continues to grow and continues
to impress. It is obvious to see that
with all the determination that
this group has to offer, it won’t
be difficult maintaining this high
standard set by the boys.
Grey has produced many
Springbok Rugby players, but with
the strides of the drama group at
the school, it’s only a matter of time
before we see Grey College produce
an Oscar winning actor.

Gumboots and Drumline set new standards
The Indomitus vocal ensemble maintained a very high standard in Paarl.
“One good thing about music, when
it hits you, you feel no pain.” – Bob
Marley
The boys of our cultural
department had the privilege of
entertaining the Paarl Boys’ High
School and Affies parents and staff
at the interschool culture evenings
in Paarl and Pretoria, respectively.
These cultural evenings took place
on 4 and 18 May, as part of the
annual inter schools against these
schools.
One of the perennial fan
favourites was the Grey Gumboots
who, as usual, dazzled with
an excellent and entertaining
performance, despite blooding some
newcomers. One of the newcomers,
Daniel Raath, said, “Gumboots
is about much more than just a
couple of guys dancing in boots.
It’s a band of brothers. It’s a way
of communication through nothing
but rhythm. It’s all about the
‘sync’ of our hearts. It’s something
that cannot be described, only
experienced.”
Our a capella group, Indomitus,
also delivered two astonishing
performances which included the
“Straight No Chaser take on 12
Days of Christmas”. This was the
first time the group performed this
item and it well and truly knocked
the socks off the audience. If this
is a forerunner of what is to come,
exciting times lie ahead.

Musikante betower die beoordelaars by jaarlikse Eisteddfod
Die jaarlikse kunswedstryd vir alle
uitvoerende kunste, aangebied
deur die Musicon, het die afgelope
maand plaasgevind. Leerders moes
hard werk om die uitslae wat hulle
verwerf het, te kry.

om die aanbieding van die

die skool se naam hoog gehou. Die
leerders het soos volg presteer:
Talle marimba-groepe het
deelgeneem en verskeie simbole
behaal. Die Koor kon hulself toets
in voorbereiding vir die Wêreld
Koorspele, wat in Julie plaasvind.
Gumboots, Indomitus en die Boere-
orkes het ook gespog met hoë
simbole.
Eric Diswane het ‘n briljante
stuk gelewer en ‘n A+++ verwerf.
Verskeie leerders het met solo-items
deelgeneem; 27 drama-items is
gelewer en twee dans-roetines is
uitgevoer.
Die skool kan trots wees op
die seuns wat ure se oefening en
harde werk ingesit het om aan die
kunswedstryd te kan deelneem.
Oefeninge begin normaalweg laat
in die middag en kan voortduur
tot laataand, nadat al die rugby en
ander sportbedrywighede klaar is.
Die Kultuur-departement is
steeds baie besig en het geen
planne om ‘n breuk te vat nie.
Daar kan met reg uitgesien word
na die hoogtepunt van die jaar, die
jaarlikse Musiekfees.

Other groups who participated
in these evenings were: The Grey

Band and the String Quartet.
Everyone can look forward to
seeing these groups in action at the
annual Nedbank Grey College Music
Festival at the end of August.

groups prove this.

‘n terugblik aan die dag toe jy

Dit is vêr verwyderd van
hoogmoed; inteendeel, dit is die
manier hoe twee mense, ongeag
hulle prestasies, gebrek daaran,
roem of swaarkry, mekaar in
die oë kan kyk met die wete dat
hulle iets in gemeen het wat
niks of niemand van jou kan
wegneem nie.
I can remember fondly at
my first Reunie dinner, which
was the 10 year reunion of our
1985 class. We commonly used
the Grey Shake at school, but
to see your classmates after
10 years, all gone in different
directions, represented in all
walks of life, this Grey Shake
cuts you right back to your size!
I remember so well on this
October night as a youngster,
there were Springbok rugby
players, well known business
people, politicians, attorneys,
teachers etc. etc. However, as
you reach out to greet your
classmate, you are nothing but
an old Grey boy, and everybody
present there that night share
exactly the same memories
from school, which is the root
and foundation of lifelong
friendships. This Grey Shake is
one ingredient of the glue that
keeps us Grey boys together,
and believe me, it sticks!
Hierdie Grey Shake is vir
die eksklusiewe gebruik van
Grey seuns, onderwysers en
oud-Greys. Dit is nie om snaaks
te wees nie, ons het net iets in
gemeen wat ‘n mens regtig vir
niemand kan beskryf wat nie
self hier op skool was nie. Ons
besef dis nie ‘n reg nie, maar ‘n
hengse voorreg!
Boys should also know
that the Grey Shake goes far
beyond any kind of fist pump,
high five or whatever way
of greeting may be used in
different cultures or pier groups.
The Grey Shake unites cultures,
more than anything else.
