Kortnuus Social media too social for learners Social media expert Emma Sadleir recently discussed the risks and abuse of social platforms. Her main message was that digital content is dangerous content, especially as people are inclined to overshare on these platforms. Ms Sadlier discussed the different risks as well as the fact that so many people – especially teenagers and children - have misconceptions as regards these risks. She emphasised that the first rule of social media is that there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’.Signing up to a free social media platform such as Instagram and Snapchat, we unknowingly give them full rights to use our social media content as they wish. Ms Sadleir also recommends that before you post something online, make sure that it is not too personal for social media. Ms Sadleir, who has four law degrees and deals with many cases involving cyber bullying, states that the catch is that not only the bully is punished but also the people who witnessed it and did nothing to stop it. For example, if you are part of a WhatsApp group and there is a case of bullying committed by someone in the group, you will also be punished even if you did not contribute to the act of bullying at all. South Africa’s criminal capacity is 10. That means that 10- year- old can be held responsible for his/her own actions and can be criminally charged. She emphasizes the importance of using social media platforms safely and to always stay up to date, as the platforms change at a very fast pace. - WOUTER VAN ASWEGEN 2014 matric receives Rhodes Scholarship Mnr Wessel Wessels leef voluit Nkahiseng Ralepeli matriculated in 2014. He will be leaving Grey College at the end of April to pursue his physiotherapy career. This soft-spoken, patient teacher carved his name on the walls of greatness in his time as Physics teacher and many learners attest to the level of understanding they were able to reach under his tuition. Mr Human did not limit himself to teaching Physics to high school learners; he resigned after his first four-year stint of teaching in order to qualify as a physiotherapist. This completed, he was again appointed at Grey while also conducting a private physiotherapy practice. He also coached high jump and travelled overseas on several occasions to accompany athletes in his care; notably, he also accompanied Wade van Niekerk overseas. He obtained his Master’s degree in physiotherapy while also teaching 2 and working in his practice – an indication of his unyielding work ethic and determination not to stagnate. This is also why, when the opportunity presented itself, Mr Human decided to establish his own physiotherapy practice in Phalaborwa. In answer to a comment about his move to a very hot part of South Africa, he observed that the recent hot summer and drought prepared him for the move to Phalaborwa. In his very limited free time, Mr Human expresses his creativity in painting. He is a passionate wildlife photographer and cites this as another good reason to uproot and move to where photography opportunities are probably more accessible. This very talented and intelligent man will undoubtedly make a success of his new beginning. His leaving will leave an enormous gap, but his legacy will undoubtedly remain. - VLADIK SEAGREEN
