No luck, lots of talent
Lucky Moleyane rewrites the record books in the u/16 sprints
The athletics season got off to a
familiar start with the annual Grey
Championship during the second
week of the new school year. The
biggest highlight of this meet
was probably the amazing record-
breaking feat of Lucky Moleyane.
In the under 16-age group,
Lucky broke two long-standing
records, set by Ian Small-Smith is
the early 1980’s. In the 100m sprint,
Lucky broke the record with a time
of 10,6 seconds, improving on the
existing mark of 10,8 seconds. In
the 200m sprint, his time of 21,49
seconds was a huge improvement on
the current record of 22,1 seconds.
Lucky was born in Bloemfontein
and attended Kruitberg Primary
School from grade 1 to grade 6,
before being accepted as a Grey
College Primary learner in grade 7.
Lucky says, “I have always enjoyed
the sprints and participated in the
60m and 80m sprints at junior level.
I never won, but finished in the top
four most of the time.”
During his grade 6 year the
idea of becoming a good sprinter
established itself in Lucky’s mind.
In his grade 7 year he partici-
pated in a variety of meets, winning
the 200m sprint at the SA Primary
Schools. He also won a silver medal
in the 100m at the same event. He
participated in the national junior
championships in both grade 6 and
grade 7.
Of his record-breaking feat at
the Grey Championship his comment
is as follows, “I was so happy with
this achievement! I have to admit
that it was my intention to break
one or both records and that I
worked very hard towards achieving
that goal. It was definitely a great
highlight in my athletics career, but
hopefully one of many to come.”
Lucky is coached by well-known
sprint coach Elinda Vorster. He has
the highest regard for the level of her
coaching and says, “She has been my
coach for mora than two years. She is
very good at motivating me to work
hard and I enjoy working with her as
a coach and as a person.”
Is Lucky possibly the next Wade
van Niekerk? He says, “I would
like to participate in athletics on a
professional level. Time will tell.”
