This year we were part of the Creative Schools Programme, a National Initiative which is led by the Arts Council in partnership with the Department of Education and Skills and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The aim of this project is to encourage and enable the creative potential in students across a range of arts practices. This year we worked with our creative associate Ruth Hyland, who supported us in planning programs which ensured a positive experience for our Students. The Creative Arts Initiative funded three programs this year:

The First Year Wellbeing Choir who successfully participated in the

Kilkenny Music Festival placing Second in the Unison Choir (Under 14 years)

division.

Our Young Environmentalist Group who designed a Bee Friendly Pollinator Zone

in the school.

Artifice Exhibition, Lismore Castle.

Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme. Its aim is to give access to high quality performance music education here in Waterford city and the surrounding county. This year we have been working in partnership with music generation to create opportunities for our students to take music lessons. We piloted a brass and wind programme. Students had music lessons once a week on their assigned instrument which included the tuba, trombone, trumpet, Euphonium, Clarinet, Flute, Saxaphone. All the students hardwork Culminated in a concert on Monday 27th of May where they performed Frere Jacques, A Message to you Rudy and When the Saints go Marching in. Tuba student Tyra-Lee said that although she found it difficult at first, she got plenty of encouragement from her teachers Peter and Danny. She soon realised the more she practiced the better she got. She would recommend students to get involved and take a chance on this programme. She has already decided that she will continue learning the tuba and plans on practicing alot in Transition Year.
