Community Groups
Working Together
The Watson Community Association was formed in the late 1980s, and incorporated
in 1995, with the object of promoting the social, economic and environmental amenity
of Watson residents.
After a sustained 10 year community campaign against a housing development
proposed in 1992, the Watson Community Association was successful in achieving
the conservation of an 18 hectare native grassy woodland at north Watson in July
2002. Less than 5 per cent of the original extent of this Yellow Box Grassy Woodland
ecology remains in Australia, and less than a half a per cent is in reserves.
Some members of our congregation have been involved with the Watson Woodlands
at Justice Robert Hope Park. Last year I was invited to photograph a community
event held there as part of the 2014 Heritage Festival. 2014. “Brushstrokes in the
Bush” was arranged by the Conservation Council ACT Region.
The Wildlife and Botanical Artists held an outdoor painting circle during the event and
worked with Playing Fields Studio to provide community participants with the opportunity to contribute to a communal artwork. The organisers also set up a Flickr page
where participants could share their photos from the event. All in all it was a great
example of community groups working together in our community.
