Bathsheba, a beautiful young woman, rejects the advances of the humble shepherd Gabriel because she believes he is far below her and will represent a constriction of her prospects. However time tells that Gabriel is actually the best person to answer her greatest needs. The Biblical themes in Far From The Madding Crowd are well established and well worth the attention of older readerships. Victorian Indigenous singer song-writer Archie Roach, who brought the story of the Stolen Generations to a broad Australian audience, is among those recognised in the 2015 Queen's Birthday honours. Roach, a Gunditjmara Bundjalung man, was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his "significant service to the performing arts as a singer, song-writer and guitarist, and to the community as a spokesman for social justice".
