Hymn Stories

O For A Thousand Tongues
This stirring and vibrant hymn has been sung by Christian groups for centuries and , indeed , some of the older members of St Margaret ’ s can recall big congregations of Christian youth , over one thousand voices , at the Lyceum theatre in Sydney and at the Great Hall in Melbourne .
It has been a great demonstration of the power of the tongue . Adolf Hitler used his tongue to mobilise millions of Germans to go to war in 1939 and , in a similar way , Winston Churchill rallied the British people to resist . Rev ’ d David Campbell , in a recent sermon , spoke of the tongue as a force for good or evil .
The hymn was written in 1749 by Charles Wesley when both he and his brother were at Oxford University , and followed on from Isaac Watts in a pro-active style . It was at Oxford that the Wesley brothers became methodical hymn writers and , thus , became Methodists .
