18 Green Infrastructure Early Implementation Projects Green infrastructure (GI) has the ability to manage stormwater and transform a place into a vibrant outdoor space that can provide habitat connectivity, improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, and beautify neighborhoods. The SFPUC is committed to exploring opportunities to use GI throughout the City to lessen the burden on our combined sewer system and better utilize rainwater as a resource. “These projects aim to manage stormwater by reducing the local runoff impact on San Francisco’s aging combined sewer system, at the same time enhancing the City streets by creating green community spaces.” Our first set of GI projects to test performance throughout the city are called the Early Implementation Projects (EIPs). In 2015, five of the eight EIPs completed design and one moved into construction. Based on technical feasibility and public input, projects were designed to include community benefits such as traffic calming, pedestrian safety improvements, nature space and educational opportunities. An exciting milestone for green infrastructure was the completion of the first phase of the Wiggle Project at Oak and Fell. In partnership with Public Works, construction began on the pilot block of the Sunset Boulevard Greenway in August. The completed project will add stormwater function to the western medians on Sunset Boulevard, in addition to the educational features for the local schools and community. Construction is expected to begin for five additional EIPs in 2016. The SFPUC will also monitor these projects and evaluate best practices and design standards for future green infrastructure implementation throughout the city. – Raphael Garcia, PROJECT MANAGER For more information on all of our EIP’s click here Completed Wiggle Neighborhood Green Corridor, Phase 1 SSIP Annual Report 2015
