YOUNG LAWYER SHOWCASE PHIL BECHER LANEY HERAUF Phil Becher is currently the supervising attorney for Sand Law, PLLC’s Minot office. He relocated to Minot from Minneapolis, Minn., in the summer of 2018. Helene (Laney) Herauf grew up in Dickinson, N.D. She received her bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of North Dakota (UND) in 2010 and her juris doctor from the UND School of Law in 2014. After graduating from law school, Herauf worked at the Greater North Dakota Chamber of Commerce as the government and regulatory affairs specialist and as an assistant state’s attorney in Burleigh County. Becher has experience in criminal defense and personal injury. His current practice is focused exclusively on criminal defense. He defends people accused of everything from disorderly conduct to serious felonies. Originally from Rochester, Minn., Becher attended undergrad at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. He attended law school at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, Minn., where he graduated cum laude. He is enjoying life in North Dakota so far and is looking forward to the summer. She is currently legal counsel with the North Dakota Insurance Department. In that role, she prosecutes insurance fraud and offers legal counsel to the Commissioner and the Department. Herauf is licensed in North Dakota and the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota. Herauf is the outgoing president of the Young Lawyer Section and sits on the board of directors for Badlands Ministries. She also co-authored an article with YLS President-Elect Sarah Wall regarding Riley v. California, published in the Adelphia Law Journal. Herauf currently lives in Bismarck where she enjoys playing various recreational league sports, spending time with friends and family, and traveling.
