GET TO KNOW YOUR BOARD MEMBER What is your current position? Partner at Zuger Kirmis & Smith law firm, Bismarck. What is your hometown, college attended, and law school attended? I grew up in Chicago, Ill. I attended the University of Illinois-Chicago Circle, then night school at Wilbur Wright Junior College, and graduated from Elmhurst College in 1976. I went to Law School at the University of North Dakota (UND) from 1976-1979. What professional work did you do before law school? I was a construction journeyman sheet metal worker with Local Union #73 in Chicago from 1972-1976. I finished college at night school at Wright and Elmhurst while working construction during the days. What led you to a career in law? One of my older brothers, Ed, went to UND Law School before me and was a law professor there. He encouraged me. I thought if he could do it, maybe I could as well. I have never regretted it. It is a great profession. How long have you been on the SBAND Board? Since August 2018. What other involvement have you had with SBAND prior to being on the board? I have served on the OAH Advisory committee, the joint Attorney Standards committee, the Ethics committee, the Law School committee, and maybe one or two others. SBAND Board Member What is your favorite quote? “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble, it’s what you know for certain that just isn’t so.” It has been attributed to Mark Twain, Artemus Ward, and Will Rogers, among others, but nobody knows for certain who said it first, or exactly how it was said. What is the last book you read (good or bad)? I am currently reading “A Prayer for Owen Meany” by John Irving. I recently finished “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas. They are both really good.
