Advancing Pre-K Minds

By: Lauren Shelton, Emma Waters, Riley Roberts, & Josie Baxter

Students in EAST this year chose to tutor the Pre-K students. The EAST students wanted to create fun activities in the classroom to help the Pre-K students learn skills that were needed. The EAST students sat down with Pre-K teachers and talked with them about the Pre-K students that would need extra help with certain skills. One child had a hard time gripping a pencil, so the EAST students purchased putty and worked with clay to strengthen the grip of the child’s hand muscles. Some Pre-K students had a hard time with their print. The EAST students printed out colorful worksheets with dotted letters that the Pre-K students could trace. The EAST students also helped teachers test students on their gross motor skills. The Pre-K teachers have such little time to complete the tasks they need to do, so it can be hard to have one on one time with all students. This was also a learning experience for the EAST students.

Pictured down below was the schedule the EAST students use for the Pre-K. There is also a picture of a sweet little girl the EAST students worked with and grew to love.
