as judges, bailiffs, and witnesses. Essential to this group of volunteers
were UND Law Trial Team alumni, who traveled from as far away as
Slippery Rock, Pa., and Seattle, Wash., to help with the event. Many
of the volunteers participated in multiple rounds. Members of the
bench and bar often judged more than one round, and several acted
as utility players, serving as judges, bailiffs, and even witnesses in the
final trials of the competition.
“It was incredible to see the tremendous amount of support the trial
competition received from the bench and bar,” Cole Johnston, a
member of UND’s Trial Team, said. “I’ve always known that UND
Law is unique in that alumni care so much about the school. And
that was never clearer to me than during this year’s trial competition.
It’s difficult to express just how much we, as students, appreciate that
support, but we certainly do.”

2. Lori Conroy is an Assistant County Attorney for Clay County, Minn. Conroy competed
on the UND School of Law Trial Team in her second and third years of law school,
advancing to the National Trial Competition in 2009. Aubrey Zuger is an attorney
with Fredrikson & Byron, P.A., in Fargo, N.D. Zuger also competed on the School of
Law’s Trial Team for two years, advancing to the National Trial Competition in Texas
in 2008. Both Conroy and Zuger have remained active with the Trial Team program
at UND following graduation, serving as adjunct coaches for the team.
3. Although we have made a concerted effort to include everyone, we sincerely apologize if
we have inadvertently left anyone off this list.
Julia L. Ernst and Denitsa Mavrova Heinrich are professors
at the UND School of Law. Mavrova Heinrich coached the
two teams from the UND School of Law who participated in
the competition.
As do all of us at UND School of Law!
A heartfelt thanks to the following members of our bench and bar and to our UND Law Trial Team alumni who graciously
offered their energy, experience, and enthusiasm during the regional rounds of the 2018 National Trial Competition: 3
