Judges for the UND School of Law Carrigan Cup internal trial competition this spring included Interim UND President Ed Schafer. Pictured from left are Shawn Peterson, President Schafer, Sam Rankin, Melissa Bucholz, John Bjorklund, and Adam Bothun. decision, 2-1, in favor of the other team (which ended up advancing to the national finals), and the close decisions demonstrate the strong showing by these students. The “white” team faced Kansas in the third round and won by a large margin of points. The UND “green” team, made up of John Heidenreich, Brandt Doerr, and Chris Nelson, faced the University of Minnesota and Drake in rounds one and two. The University of Minnesota is a strong contender and had several returning members from last year’s national qualifying team. Here, too, the UND team fell in a narrow, 2-1 split decision. The second round trial against Drake was equally as close and also resulted in a 2-1 split decision. In the third round, the “green” team took on the University of South Dakota. In an anomalous outcome, the UND team fell 2-1 but had more overall points than the South Dakota team. In short, the results for both teams in the preliminary rounds were, once again, proof that our students are among the best in the region. Credit also goes to the excellent efforts of the Trial Team’s coaches, Joseph Parise, Lori Conroy, and Elizabeth Alvine. At the Phi Alpha Delta Mock Trial Competition in Washington, D.C., the School of Law’s P.A.D. Corliss Chapter sent a first-year team, Jon Cantrell, Jenna Bergman, Allyssa Wall, and Michael Kustra, ably coached by Sharon Lo and Ashley Hinds. The Corliss Chapter team brought home the competition’s first-ever Best Fraternalism award for courage, integrity, compassion, and professionalism. We are justifiably proud of all of these students, and we continue to work to make skills instruction part of every student’s educational experience at UND School of Law. Again, thank you to all of the judges and lawyers who provide invaluable assistance in serving as coaches, judges, and mentors to our students! SPRING 2016 23
