Spotlight Magazine There’s No Gain If There’s Pain! Have you ever been told there’s ‘no gain without pain’ and that you should ‘go for the burn’? This advice may be fine if you’re a competitive athlete, but what about those of us who want to improve our general well being without forcing and straining? What if there are forms of exercise that are more relaxing and gentle but still powerful and effective? Well, there are - the ancient Chinese exercise systems known as Tai Chi and Qigong. The slow, continuous movements of these systems give you time to enjoy feeling what your body is doing. The flowing sequences enable you to relax into soft, circular stretches that feel wonderful. Deep breathing and mental focus combine with physical movement to bring about calm, unforced exercise. Qigong is basically a simpler version of the choreographed movement sequence known as the Tai Chi ‘form’. Both of these systems are low-impact and weight bearing and are designed to bring body, mind and spirit into balance and harmony. Exercising in this state of inner calm helps you combat the stress and tension that so often interferes with your body’s natural healing processes. Don’t be deceived though – your body works hard to maintain the control required to move slowly! The result is a movement sequence that is beautiful, absorbing and life-enhancing – and there’s no pain!
