Elysa Sandron Plays for Team Canada At the recent 2015-16 HSBC Women’s Sevens Series held in Dubai back on Dec. 3-4, Winnipeg’s Mandy Marchak represented Canada’s A Team, However, Canada will also entered a Maple Leafs side into the Dubai International Invitational. The team, coached by Morgan Williams, included Winnipeg’s Elysa Sandron. Sandron, a wing on Team Manitoba who is a freshman at the University of Calgary, was just named top rookie in the Canada West women’s rugby league. She was also named to the CIS All-Canadian women’s rugby team. Four Manitobans Claim World Ringette Gold Winnipeg’s Talia Gallant, captain of the national U-21 Ringette team, led our national team to the World Junior Women’s Ringette Championship. Gallant, who was selected as player of the game during one of the round robin matches returned to Canada, along with Sam Renooy and Keyona Tomiuk from Oakbank, and Ryann Bannerman from Winnipeg, with gold medals from the World Championships in Helsinki. Team Canada U21 defeated the Finns 10-9 in overtime to claim the gold medal. Canada went undefeated in round robin play and beat the Finns in two games of a best of three series. Goldeyes extend manager Rick Forney’s contract Rick Forney will be staying with the Winnipeg Goldeyes for some time to come. The manager’s contract has been extended through the 2018 season. The upcoming 2016 American Association campaign will be Forney’s 11th as the Goldeyes’ manager, and his 20th overall with the organization. During his first 10 years at the helm, Forney guided Winnipeg to eight winning seasons, seven playoff berths, the 2012 American Association championship, and an overall record of 537-444 (.547 winning percentage). The Goldeyes are 281218 since joining the American Association in 2011, and Forney’s .563 winning percentage during that time is the third highest among the 39 managers in league history.
