Winnipeg’s Ogoms Named NCAA All-American
Recently, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced
that Alicia Ogoms, the University of Southern California senior
middle blocker and the daughter of Winnipeg’s Laura Kwiatkowski and Joe Ogoms, had been selected to the 2015-16 Second
All-American team. Ogoms received her first-career All-America
honour and became the 39th USC volleyball All-American. Ogoms
received her first-career Pac-12 All-Conference and AVCA All-Region Team selections this season. She also received her first Pac-12
Defensive Player of the Week honour and was chosen to all three
of USC’s pre-conference all-tournament teams. Ogoms set new
personal marks in all statistical categories this season including 15
kills (at Colorado, Oct. 9) and 11 blocks (at Washington State, Nov.
1); and produced a new USC single-season record for blocks (183).
She finishes her career in 11th on the program’s career blocks ladder (381). Ogoms led the Pac-12 in blocks and blocks
per set (1.44 bps), and was second in hitting percentage (.413) with a career-high 255 kills. Ogoms and the USC Women
of Troy were recently upset 3-2 by Kansas in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball regional final. Ogoms, a 6-foot-4 junior
middle blocker, was the top-ranked high school volleyball player in Manitoba as a senior. She was named MVP of the
West Winnipeg Athletic Conference and was selected to the All-Manitoba Team. In 2011, she was selected MVP of the
Provincial Championships where she led the Flames to the MHSAA AAAA title.
Shae Weekes Wears Team Canada Jersey
St. Paul’s High School’s All-Star cornerback, Shae Weekes,
a young man who doesn’t even graduate until the end of
next season, wore a Team Canada football uniform earlier
this month. Weekes, 17, who hails from St. Adolphe, played
for Football Canada’s under-18 national team as it took on
Team USA in a pair of games at the 2016 International Bowl
series at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The squad,
selected from last summer’s under-18 national championship the 2015 Football Canada Cup, played the U.S. U-19
selects on Jan. 31 and the faced the U.S. U-18 national
team on Wednesday, February 3. Weekes can play cornerback or safety, return punts and kickoffs and even play
wide receiver if required. He’s fast and skilled and certainly
impressed the national team coaching staff at the 2015
Football Canada Cup. It’s expected that he’ll star for Team
Manitoba this summer and he’ll be back for his Grade 12
year at St. Paul’s.
